The Bunker Hill Monument memorializes
the famous Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the
first major battles of the American Revolutionary
War. The Battle of Bunker Hill, which was actually
fought primarily on Breed's Hill, took place on
June 17, 1775. The monument is a popular tourist
attraction and one of Boston's most visible landmarks.
The Bunker Hill Monument, located on Breed's Hill
in Charlestown, Mass., is a 221-foot granite obelisk.
It has 294 steps inside and though it briefly had an
elevator (from 1842 to 1844) it no longer does, so
if you are visiting and want to see the view from the
top be prepared for a climb.
